About the Author

Registered Nurses Karon White Gibson and Joy Smith Catterson started one of the nation's first Independent Nurse Practitioner offices in Chicago. The young idealistic nurses expected to heal bumps and bruises, and ended up dealing with all that ails the human body and soul.

The daring move was more controversial than they expected and impacted their lives in many ways.

Their courageous, updated story details their adventures running and expanding their entrepreneurial opportunities as Registered Professional Nurses.

Karon White Gibson, RN TV Host and Producer of OUTSPOKEN WITH KARON ON CABLE TV (see below for days and times) created her story from notes taken from her adventures in Nursing School in an inner city hospital during the great snow storm of l967 (transporting women from helicopters landing in the park across from the hospital on ironing boards with policemen to working the E.R. during the riots) to her experiences in the psychiatric unit of a suburban hospital to her memories of creating an entrepreneurial business success in the Nursing arena ranging from being the First Aid Nurse on Risky Business and Doctor Detroit to providing home care to the poor and lottery winners.

SHE ALSO WORKED AS A PRIVATE DETECTIVE WITH HER HUSBAND AND PARTNER.

She sold her story to St. Martin's Press without an agent in one week. Later, Nurses On Our Own was also published by Avon paperbacks and is now an Author's back in print book which can be linked to at her AmericaNurse.com website. She has been profiled in People Magazine, The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times, Today's Chicago Woman, Nurseweek, The American Journal of Nursing and others.

She is the recipient of the Community Service Award from Nurseweek Magazine, Woman of the Year Southtown Economist News, National Association of Women Business Owner's Chicago Chapter Businesswoman of the Year. She is also a contributor to the Herald News as a columnist.

The Western Suburbs air it on Comcast Channel 19 at 7:30 on Weds evenings; the southern suburbs air it on Comcast Channel 19 on 7:30 on Thursday evenings; the City of Chicago airs it on Thursday nights at l0 p.m. on Channel 25 and again on Friday nights at 9:30 p.m. on Channel 25.
