About the Author
Julie Phend loves everything about books: reading, writing, discussing, speaking and teaching about them. An educator for many years, Julie holds a BA in English and Theater from Valparaiso University and an MS in education from the University of Wisconsin. While teaching language arts in Naperville, Illinois, she met WWII veteran Stanley Edwards when he spoke to her eighth graders about his experiences in the war. As a result, they collaborated on a book titled D-Day and Beyond: a True Story of Escape and POW Survival. Julie travels to schools, veterans’ events, and book clubs to speak about the book and Stan’s remarkable story.
About the Book
D-Day
and Beyond: a True Story of Escape and POW Survival tells the true story of
WWII veteran Stanley Edwards Jr. and his experience as a young pilot sent into
France to drop paratroopers on D-Day in 1944. After a harrowing flight, his
plane was shot down, and he was forced to jump. Separated from his military unit
and alone in a foreign country, Stan Edwards was without weapons, cut off from
news sources, ignorant of military plans, and unable to speak the language.
He had to swallow his fear, gather his courage, and do whatever it took
to survive. In spite of this, he
managed to escape Nazi capture three times before finally being sent to prison
camp at Stalag Luft III. There, he learned to survive as a POW, made lifelong
friends, and learned some of the most important lessons in life.
“Stan Edwards’ story of repeated capture and escape is like
a great conversation with a history-loving uncle.”
-
Chuck Coppola , WGN-TV
“Stanley Edwards’ story
is the stuff that books and movies are made of . . . Phend has done a wonderful
job of penning a story that ought not to be forgotten.”
- Donna Chavez, Everything
Naperville
